The Unpacked event held by Samsung last August, finally revealed the figure of the Galaxy Z Fold 3. This smartphone offers a lot of new features and things, but one of the things that is in the public spotlight is the camera feature under the screen or Under Display. Cameras (UDC).
This makes many people ask, why aren't there many new smartphones, including flagships that feature such under-screen camera technology? We have known that many smartphones have used in-display fingerprint sensor technology since 2018, but why have so far only three smartphones with under-display cameras?
Since Apple launched its first iPhone, the demand for All-Screen smartphones has grown tremendously. Consumers want their smartphones to have the biggest screen possible, yet still be easy to grip and can be used with one hand.
In the end, the edge that surrounds the smartphone screen becomes a space that cannot be used to display content. Therefore, many smartphone manufacturers are making great efforts to hide their sensors and other smartphone parts, in order to meet the demands of those users.
For example, if you compare the Samsung Note 7 which was released in 2016, with the Samsung Note 8 which was released a year later, you will notice that the fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back of the panel.
A few years later, the Samsung Note 10 removed the entire sensor at the top, leaving only the camera hole in the middle.
This year, only three smartphone models use under-display camera technology, with only two available for the global market. Samsung's implementation could be the main catalyst to bring this technological innovation into mass production.
That's because Samsung's wide market reach can force its competitors to release the same features on their flagship devices. Although the Z Fold 3 is quite expensive, users who have experienced the technology also hope that the next upcoming foldable smartphone will apply the same technology, even for non-flagship models.
This pressure from consumers will result in other smartphone manufacturers to participate in implementing under-screen camera technology. However, maybe the development can only be obtained in a few years, because the under-screen camera technology is still a very new technology. It can be seen from the fingerprint sensor technology under the screen, which is only present three years after its first development.
The under-display camera technology is much more complex than the fingerprint sensor, and has its own set of challenges. But once these problems are resolved, you can expect more smartphones to use the technology.
