After a long wait because the release of the film was also delayed due to Covid-19, finally, what you’ve been waiting for, the sequel to Venom has finally got its release date on November 17, 2022, in Indonesian theaters.
Judging from the title alone, of course you will have hype which is very big, especially for you comic lovers, because in the comic itself Carnage is described as a very brutal villain when he is fighting against his enemies. However, whether all of that was successfully executed in this sequel film?
Venom: Let There Be Carnage tells the continuation of Eddie Brock’s story in the previous film, where after all these events ended, Eddie received an invitation to meet Cletus Kasady, who is told is a very cruel serial killer.
Armed with Venom’s very sharp memory and vision, Eddie manages to uncover all of Cletus’ crimes, which eventually makes him sentenced to death for all the crimes that have been revealed. Meanwhile, thanks to his services, Eddie Brock’s popularity rose rapidly again, making his life better.
But it makes Cletus Kasady have a grudge against Eddie. He considers that the writings that have been published by Eddie are only for the sake of increasing popularity, all positive things about him are not shown so that he feels cornered until he is finally sentenced to death.
That’s where the conflict begins, where later Cletus Kasady will transform into Carnage to take revenge on Eddie and become an invincible villain.
In this sequel, the relationship between Eddie and Venom is very well described, starting from the way they live, the problems they experience, all of which are presented by Andy Serkis as a director who seems to be trying to make the audience feel sympathy for Venom. That’s not a bad thing, because later when Venom chooses to live free from Eddie’s body, the compassion from within you will come out, that’s why Venom’s togetherness with Eddie is always highlighted from the beginning of the film.
But as a result, the duration of Carnage’s appearance in this film feels very minimal. Whether it’s because of the short duration of the film or because the plot is too slow at the start, I feel that the potential of Carnage is not shown to its full potential. In fact, the reason I have such a big hype when watching this film is none other than Carnage, I am very curious about Carnage but why does it only appear for a short time?
Carnage indeed appears as a badass villain, actor Woody Harrelson who plays Cletus Kasady has also performed well. It’s a shame if the cool villain character only appears briefly considering that his name is on the film’s title. In fact, if this Carnage appeared from the start, the film might look even more badass, considering that Carnage is brutal with a much more sinister appearance than Venom.
Not only is Carnage’s potential lacking, the potential of his partner, Frances Barrison, who is also a villain, seems completely useless. As Cletus Cassady’s partner, Frances Barrison becomes an obstacle because the power of her sonic sound interferes with Carnage and Venom during the fight. It was also the power of that voice that ended up straining her relationship with Cletus so that chemistry between the 2 villains it seemed very bad.
These shortcomings make me prefer Venom in the first film compared to the current one. Honestly, this Venom: Let There Be Carnage wastes too much of its immense potential. Maybe because the duration of the film is also relatively short, only about 96 minutes, making the plot feel fast in the middle to the end of the film. But still, Venom: Let There Be Carnage should be better than this.
Score
6/10
I gave a score of 6 because Venom: Let There Be Carnage managed to display Carnage’s character very well, even though his appearance was only for a short time. The graphic quality of this film also has a very rapid improvement from the first film, coupled with the quality of Tom Hardy’s acting as Eddie Brock who is still consistent, making this film worthy of a recommendation for you to watch in your spare time.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage also doesn’t have a high rating, so it’s safe to watch with family or friends.
