Human birth is usually a thing that has a symbol of hope. But for the artificial life created by Laboratory 1718, what lies beneath their surface is nothing more than a sinister conspiracy and murder, devoid of bounty or happiness. Cyborg Alpha is one of the extreme forms of artificial life created by them.
Fifty years ago, a great scientist named Dr. Baker decided to separate himself from Eruditio, because of his differing thoughts on human experimentation. Driven by dreams of human augmentation as a means to advance civilization, he then founded Laboratory 1718 on a remote island. As far as Dr. Baker knew, even though he and his laboratory had been separated from Eruditiotheir ultimate goal remains the same, namely to create a prosperous future for mankind.
However, what he never expected was that since an additional mad scientist had joined his laboratory team, the place had started to spiral out of control. Their madness was now at its peak, until in the end Professor Giraad had the heart to kill Dr. Baker who was his only partner to gain all control over Laboratory 1718. But unfortunately, Professor Giraad’s self-esteem and attractiveness was lower than that of Dr. Baker. Baker, which led to a conflict of interest with many parties with different ideas.
The same fate as Dr. Baker, Octavius is another scientist expelled from Eruditio because the goal is to create humans who are composed entirely of mechanical materials with their own consciousness. This is certainly very contrary to other scientists who have an obsession with humans and biology. Because of that, Octavius began to join the 1718 laboratory to realize his dream which he had not been able to get in Eruditio. After officially joining the 1718 Laboratory, Octavius immediately proposed a project “Alpha – Beta”a plan that would result in a pair of superpowered twins whom he named Alpha and Beta.
However, the other mad scientists who had higher positions in the 1718 Laboratory were not at all interested in such a project, so it ended up being a project “Alpha – Beta” was cancelled. However, Octavius was patiently waiting for an opportunity. Until a time came when Octavius was almost completely destroyed. In the darkness of that night, the evolved human Saber could no longer endure the torment of the system that manipulated his nervous system. He caused damage to most parts of the 1718 Laboratory and fled, Octavius’s Laboratory was not spared the chaos either. A large amount of expensive scientific equipment had been damaged, and Beta which was still in the development stage had been completely destroyed, leaving Alpha unmounted in her own body. Almost all of Octavius’ efforts over the years have now been burned.
Seeing his entire project scorched, Octavius burst out laughing, the other scientists around him thought that Octavius had given up and went crazy. But who would have thought, it turned out that Octavius was laughing because he knew that this was the right time for him to get the opportunity he had been waiting for. The mess that Saber made while escaping has brought disaster to the plan “Human Weapon” which is an experiment led by Professor Giraad. The plan, Saber will be used to destroy the city Eruditio who had humiliated scientists like them, but after Saber escaped, the plan failed. After his plan failed miserably, Professor Giraad was heavily criticized and forced out of his position. It was at this moment that Octavius got his chance, and voiced his opinion out loud.
“Cyborg who have consciousness will only present betrayal, but unlike pure artificial humans, they will always obey the principles of Laboratory 1718.”
Since long ago, the project Alpha – Beta Octavius’s was indeed the second choice after Professor Giraad’s project, and now that the professor had fallen, there was nothing left to do but carry out the project.
Alpha – Beta the. With the superpowers and technicalities in the 1718 Laboratory, Alpha was created. His appearance was similar to that of a knight wearing heavy armor. As Octavius had planned, he had an unwavering loyalty to the 1718 Laboratory. Apart from that, he also possessed the latest technology in terms of power and weapon systems, all of his abilities far surpassing any other robotic creature created by scientists.
Alpha had the same flesh and cortex body as an adult male, but in reality, he was still like a newborn. Like a doll, he will always depend on Octavius and always help him in any situation. The first mission given to Alpha is to defeat the traitor, Saber.
During the mission, Alpha brings his special friend, an advanced fighting machine called Beta. Then, they set out on a mission to find Saber. However, there is one thing that even their creator, Octavius, did not predict, that the seed of a living mind begins to grow in Alpha’s mind. Somehow, Alpha can clearly remember when Saber betrayed them, she and Beta had reached consciousness at the same time, and they had connected with each other on a deeper level. When Saber broke into the Laboratory and slashed at Beta, Alpha had felt what had crushed Beta as if it were hers, as well as a new, painful feeling, though at the time she didn’t even know what it was.
From a human point of view, Alpha’s feelings can be described as “hate”. The connection between Beta and Alpha consciousness is so strong, it’s as if they are one. This is a strong bond, more than just a blood relationship as experienced by mankind. More than just machines created simultaneously, they are true brothers that emerged simultaneously. And Saber had broken that bond.
On a dark and stormy night, Alpha encounters Saber. The first time they cross swords, Alpha takes heavy damage and Saber is ready to finish him off. But that’s when Beta strikes between them to block it. Most surprising thing, Saber instead kept his sword. He looks towards Alpha and Beta, both in a sorry state. He was once controlled by a Laboratory Scientist in 1718. However, now he saw that behind their flesh and mechanical skeleton lies greater possibility. Saber smiled, as if provoking Alpha, and spoke softly in a mocking tone:
“You are a soulless being who can never defeat me in battle.”
Disappearing in the pouring rain, a question began to haunt Alpha’s mind, “really, what does he mean by soul?”
Alpha doesn’t give up on her revenge, and she believes that the secret of the “soul” that Saber mentioned must be what makes her stronger. As the storm begins to subside, Alpha staggers with Beta in his arms, his mind full of
“Soul is power. I have to find a soul!”
