A game is definitely not complete without a villain, however, did you know that not all antagonist characters are bad people? Want to know who the antagonist characters are? Let us refer further!
1. Revolver Ocelot (Metal Gear Series)
As one of the most frequent antagonist characters in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, many people consider Revolver Ocelot to be a lunatic; especially if we remember his plan to destroy the world with the help of Liquid Snake.
However, because Hideo Kojima’s series never has an easy story, we know that Revolver Ocelot is actually a triple agent who pits various parties against each other in order to get financial assistance called Philosopher’s Legacy which he will use to create The Patriots.
Revolver Ocelot actually has a noble enough goal to free all of humanity, however, unfortunately he changed his mind after losing his hand in the first Metal Gear Solid game.
Even though he managed to get Liquid Snake’s hand to replace the missing body part, Liquid Snake’s personality began to enter his body so that Ocelot slowly turned cold-blooded.
But is it true? It didn’t. Metal Gear Solid 4 reveals that Ocelot is pretending to be possessed by Liquid’s personality. He had one agenda from the start, and he kept it to the end.
2. Logan (Fable III)
Anyone who played Fable III would have seen Logan as an evil king and from the start it was very obvious. Although he is the eldest child of the Fable II characters, Logan doesn’t have the same heart as his father.
In addition to asking us to choose between a group of demonstrators or your first love who must be killed, Logan also increases taxes, treats slavery and takes his own people’s money so that his people want to revolt.
However, after Logan stepped down from his position as king we actually know that a new, much bigger problem is about to come.
A great catastrophe that could wipe out the entire population of Albion was about to arrive, and it turned out that Logan had been taking it all this time.
As the new king, now we have to think about whether to remain kind and sacrifice a large part of Albion’s territory or increase taxes to pay for the troops that can guard Albion.
In the end, we come to understand that Logan is a benevolent king, however, he has his own way of doing things.
3. Darth Traya (Star Wars: KotoR II)
Besides having an interesting storyline, KotoR II also turns out to have one of the wisest antagonist characters.
At first Traya was just a Jedi who was forced to undergo exile after his student became a follower of Darth Revan and moved to the Dark Side.
After the incident, Traya made another mistake after raising two students who actually cut ties between herself and The Force. However, all these bad events actually made him a wise mentor in KotoR II.
KotoR II often gives us moral choices that are quite heavy, and often Traya is the only person who can help us make choices.
If in general a mentor will give the answer that he thinks is the best, then Traya will explain the consequences of each of these choices so that we can remain fair in our choices.
Although Traya is still a bad person in the end, we have to admit that she is a very wise mentor.
4. The Fireflies (The Last of Us)
The Fireflies are an underground group that has the noble goal of finding a cure for the zombie plague that is attacking the world, however, in order to complete the mission they must kill a small child.
The vaccine that is in Ellie’s body can only be taken if the Fireflies scientists dissect her brain, and of course this does not get the approval of Joel who throughout the game has played the role of her adoptive father and immediately decided to kill most of the members of the Fireflies.
Naughty Dogs has said that the scene has more than one meaning, and we can choose to agree with Joel’s actions or not.
Killing a small child is indeed a very bad act, however, is it understandable if it can save all of humanity? Was letting Ellie die the best course of action? It seems that everyone has their own opinion.
5. Scorpion (Mortal Kombat Series)
Just by looking at his appearance, everyone would agree that Scorpion is a villain. Even though his body may have died long ago, his hatred for Sub-Zero and his entire ninja clan still lives on.
The hatred began to arise after the family and members of the Scorpion clan were killed in the years-long war between the two clans. This is also the reason why Scorpion is willing to work with Tsang-Tsung and Quan Chi to avenge Sub-Zero.
After being revived, Scorpion’s desire for revenge begins to fade after realizing that the surviving Sub-Zero is the younger brother of Sub-Zero who killed his family.
Scorpion has obvious reasons to be annoyed and wants revenge on Sub-Zero, as killing an entire family and clan is no small matter. Unfortunately, this makes him always play the role of a criminal.
6. Loghain Mac Tir (Dragon Age: Origins)
Loghain Mac Tir is a traitor, and everyone who played Dragon Age: Origins would agree with that after seeing him run away in the middle of a fight.
When we meet again with Loghain, he has branded all the members of the Gray Wardens as traitors which further complicates our task.
However, if we consider his position as part of the force tasked with protecting Ferelden, what he did was actually understandable.
If Loghain had not fled the battle at the start of Dragon Age: Origins, then his entire army would have been killed and not a single soldier left to protect Ferelden from the coming war.
The choices he makes may seem disappointing in the short term, however, in the end it’s all he does for the sake of winning a much bigger fight.
If you choose to bring up Loghain again in Inquisition, you will find he is no less heroic than Alistair as the Gray Warden. Even though this man is still haunted by his mistakes from the Origins era.
7. Haytham Kenway (Assassin’s Creed III)
Even if you’ve never played Assassin’s Creed III, just by looking at Haytham Kenway you’ll definitely know right away that he’s not a good person, especially if we remember he has spent a lot of time controlling all of humanity.
However, regardless of the plan, Haytham’s main goal was to stop the conflict between the Assassins and the Templars which had claimed many lives.
Even though his plan sounded terrible and Haytham also had a high position in the Templars, he really only wanted to save the lives of millions of innocent people.
Compared to what Ezio and Altair did during his lifetime, it seems Haytham is a much better person.
