French game developer and publisher Ubisoft has shared its plans to become a key player in the blockchain industry when it comes to developing projects based on the play-to-earn concept.
Blockchain and NFT technologies have recently been widely adapted to the gaming industry. Valve previously removed blockchain and NFT on Steam, but other platforms like Epic Games have embraced it instead.
Now, it looks like Ubisoft wants to take part in the action. The company isn’t just investing in Animoca Brands, a blockchain gaming company.
However, they also announced plans to integrate blockchain technology into future video game releases. Even so, the company’s plans have not been clearly disclosed to this day.
What is the Play-to-earn Concept?

Play-to-earn is a concept that allows game developers to provide cryptocurrency in exchange for playing games. Simply put, play-to-earn can be interpreted as playing games for money.
Ubisoft Chief Executive Officer Yves Guillemot shared more about this. He said companies are interested in creating a digital economy.
“As you can see, the industry is changing regularly with many new revolutions taking place. We consider blockchain to be one of those revolutions.
It will imply more play-to-earn which will allow more players to actually get content, own content, and we think that will grow the industry quite a lot.” said Guillemot during an earnings call or teleconference.
“So we’ve worked with a lot of small companies that are using blockchain, and we’re starting to have a good knowledge of how we can impact the industry. We want to be one of the key players there,” he added.
Ubisoft Believes Blockchain Is Attractive For The Long-Term

Despite all this, Ubisoft believes that blockchain is very attractive in the long term and that it is a revolution in the industry.
Even so, the method for implementing blockchain into future games is unknown.
However, it is very likely that players will be able to buy and trade skins and other in-game items as NFTs for cryptocurrencies.
For now, all we can do is speculate, but Ubisoft has confirmed it. In an investor call, Ubisoft CFO Frederick Duguet said the company would devote more time and resources to the play-to-earn model of the game.
Maybe later it will be applied to mainstream games like Assassin’s Creed and Tom Clancy with the blockchain concept at some point.
