As the use of information technology has increased the dependence on it, there can be a little carelessness or unawareness. After a single click, there can be a fatal accident.

By misusing the internet, the criminal gang commits blackmailing, cyberbullying, hacking etc. Many people have to be socially humiliated, as well as suicide. In order to avoid such unwanted incidents, you have to be aware, you have to know the safe use of the internet.

The Cyber Crime Awareness Foundation has suggested some ways to stay safe on the internet. Their published suggestions are presented to the readers of Time News.

(a) Protection of your personal information:

1.  Account Security: Take strong security measures to protect your online account from hacking. For example: biometric, one-time code as the security key via mobile, etc.  Keep in mind that usernames and passwords alone are not enough to protect important accounts such as your email accounts, banks and social media.

2. Create a password with sentences: A strong password is a sentence of at least 12 characters. You can use such positive sentences or phrases as passwords that are easy to remember.  You can use spaces, symbols, numbers, uppercase-lowercase characters to strengthen passwords.

3. Different accounts have different passwords: Use a different password for everyone instead of using the same password in all accounts. It helps cyber criminals prevent password theft.

4. Write down passwords in a safe place: Using a different password for each account helps cybercriminals thwart attempts.  At least separate the passwords of your office and personal accounts. Make sure you have very strong passwords for very important accounts.

(b) Warning about the use of the Internet:

1. Leave it out when in doubt: Cybercriminals often try to steal your personal information through weblinks, social media posts, and online advertisements sent in emails. If you suspect any of these things while using the Internet, delete them without clicking.

2. Wifi hotspot: Make the security settings of the WiFi hotspot according to the type of your organization. Limit the number of users only according to the number of users the organization has.

3.  Protect money: When shopping online and doing banking activities, be sure of the security of that website. See if the website's address bar https:// or "shttp:// is showing up." This means that the website has security measures to protect your information.  If there is a "http://", you will know that it is not safe.

(c) Be a conscious internet user:

1.  Keep up with the times: Get acquainted with ways to stay safe on the internet; Visit trusted websites to learn the latest information and share it with friends, family, and colleagues; Encourage everyone to be aware of the use of the internet.

2. Think before you give information: If you are prompted to do something immediately on the Internet, be careful if you invite a big opportunity, and ask for your personal information about it.

3.  Be careful in storing information: When saving copies of any of your valuable works, songs, pictures, and other digital information, do so safely.

(d) Be a good online citizen:

1. It's safer for me, safer for everyone: everything you do online at home, at work, and around the world is affecting others in one way or another. So practice good work to benefit the citizens of the virtual world.

2. Post something about others online as others are doing about you: Do something as good online as possible.

3.  Cooperate with the concerned authorities in curbing cyber crime: The administration has stepped in to investigate cyber crimes. If cyber crime is organized in your vicinity, inform the concerned officers in the nearest police station, cyber crime investigation branch of the police.

(e) Your online presence:

1. Personal information is your asset, ensure its protection: information related to you, such as: shopping details, location, is very valuable. It's like your money. Think about how to collect this information through websites and apps.

2. Awareness about sharing information: Set the privacy settings of the website and your digital device for sharing information. Privacy settings are sufficient for who you're sharing information with.

3.  Be careful about sharing information: Think before sharing any information about yourself and others online. Consider how others will react when you see the information you share.

(f) Protection of your computer:

1.  Security software: Use updated security software (anti-virus), web browser and operating system. These will protect you against viruses, malware and other online threats.

2.  Automatic software update: In order to protect against known risks, various software on the computer is automatically added to the Internet and updated from the corresponding server. For this, keep the 'Auto Update' option of your software on.

3.  Protect all devices connected to the Internet: Computers, smartphones, gaming systems, and other devices connected to the Internet also need protection from viruses.

4. Plugs and Scans: Your computer can be infected with viruses through USB plugs and other external devices. Use security software to scan them.
