The game takes place in the post-apocalypse 2019 and follows the disappearance of AMS agent Thomas Rogan, and the journey of his daughter Lisa and his former partner G to find him.
III was developed on the PC-based Sega Chihiro arcade hardware. It raised the gameplay mechanics of the 2000 Namco rail Shooter Vampire Night; Its director, Yoshinori Tomoyasu, was involved in the production. III was the last House of the Dead game produced by WOW Entertainment President Rikiya Nakagawa, who will resign in 2003.
The game has received generally positive reviews, with praise for its graphics but criticism for its linearity and short length. It was ported toPC, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Wii (in the compilation of The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return), and PlayStation Network. The game also received a spin-off, The Typing of the Dead 2, in 2007. A sequel, The House of the Dead 4, was released in 2005.
Describe
Outside, Daniel stops to face the EFI Building and say goodbye to his father. Swearing not to let his father's efforts go to waste, Daniel promised to return if "[humans] go the wrong way again." Then he and Lisa left.
Daniel loses the desire to move forward and acts choppy. His voice turns monstrously deep, and a close-up of his face reveals that he has become a creature. Lisa screams in the background.
Lisa sees her car driving away, but Rogan and J are behind. A creature has been detected behind the wheel. Lisa and Daniel squawk, with the former shouting "Hey, this is my car, you sticky bastards! Say your prayers!" (The arcade version changes the first line to "Let's keep after him!") While the agents watch.
An unidentified man in a limp business suit goes to the Wheel of Fate lab to retrieve Daniel's genes. He mumbles, "It seems [Corian] didn't understand her true purpose" and laughs.
Play
The House of the Dead III retains the gameplay of its predecessors: while the camera moves in a predetermined path, players shoot enemies to avoid losing lives through damage. Barrels and other objects can be destroyed to reveal bonus items, which will either increase the player's points or give more lives.
III offers pump guns as standard weapons. They can carry up to 6 bullets before reloading and can hit multiple enemies simultaneously, especially those who are close to each other or in one line. The arcade version has physical guns that must be pumped to reload; The console versions either have an automatic reload or require players to point their aiming device off the screen instead.
Instead of civilians, there are "rescue partner" sequences where one player's character is isolated and trapped by creatures, requiring the other to rescue them. The most dangerous creatures are highlighted in red before the event begins. Success leads to an additional life; Failure does not occur, although there is no life penalty if a trapped partner is accidentally attacked or shot. In multiplayer games, a player's weapon captured during the sequence will be disabled. Successful completion of all Partner Rescue events unlocks a secret set of reward items at the end of the game.
Boss battles are now a meter smaller under their health bars. This counter must be emptied by repeated shots of key weaknesses so that their attacks are disabled. Some bosses also appear in the middle of the levels, not at the end.
Other features III introduced to the series include:
End level rating system
A total of four endings
You are asked to choose your path
Time Attack mode, where Dr. Kurian gives his analysis of player performance
The Wii version adds the ability to use the pistol as a combat attack to fend off enemy strikes but it must be reloaded after each use.
Development
The House of the Dead III was developed on Naomi 2 arcade hardware [6] before it was eventually released on Chihiro, an Xbox-based arcade board. It was originally marketed as The House of the Dead 3 (lacking the Roman numeral) and had cartoonish shaded graphics. [6][7] This artistic direction has been reformulated to be more realistic. [8]
This was the last game that Rikiya Nakagawa worked on as a producer before stepping down as Sega's head of Wow Entertainment. Nakagawa has been the producer behind several AM1-developed titles, including the previous two House of the Dead, The Typing of the Dead, and Zombie Revenge. Being the face of the House of the Dead series at the time, he and Peter Moore (Sega of America CEO at the time) also reportedly appeared in the 2003 movie as zombies.
marketing
Sega held a "Become a Zombie" contest from October 25 to November 23, 2001. [10][11] Participants provided pictures and short explanations of zombie (a creature) costumes, with the winner becoming an enemy in the final match. The finalists were chosen on November 30 of that year and judged by the staff of The House of the Dead III. [11] The winning submission was used for a creature called Meat Man, which once appeared in the EFI Genome Ward level.
To celebrate the release of The House of the Dead III and 4 on PlayStation 3 in 2012, the English-language Sega blog held a contest in which fans wrote haikus as a "poem" to the creatures. PlayStation Move consoles and download codes for III were presented as prizes. [12]
Release
The Xbox port was released on October 24, 2003, and the PC version was released in 2005. The Xbox version was notable for being one of only three games for the console that supported the Light Gun console, the other two being Silent Scope Complete, Starsky, and Hutch.
The PlayStation 3 port was announced by Sega on January 5, 2012. [13] It was released on February 7 of that year. [14] Due to a restructuring of the PlayStation Store prior to the release of PlayStation 5 in November 2020, as of October 19 and 28, 2020, House of the Dead III is no longer purchasable on the web or mobile devices, respectively; Players must instead access the Store directly from their PlayStation 3. [15]
It was announced in 2021 that PlayStation 3, PSP and Vita games will be discontinued from the PlayStation Store on July 2, 2021. [16] This means that The House of the Dead III will not be available for purchase, although those who have already purchased and downloaded the game They can play it. However, Sony reversed this decision on April 19, 2021, and PlayStation 3 and Vita games remain available while the PSP will be discontinued as planned.
PC Edition Bonus Content
The Xbox version includes the PC port of The House of the Dead 2, which can be unlocked after beating The House of the Dead III. As the player(s) move from Level III to 2, a unique mini-game is played that features new additional scenes and character dialogue. This feature will be retained in the Wii compilation The House of the Dead: 2 & 3 Return, which borrows heavily from the Xbox port.
The mini-game begins with Lisa Rogan and G bidding farewell to the player(s) as they enter the Time Travel elevator. The elevator will stop in 2015, 2010, 2005 and 2000. During each of these stops, the elevator door will open and the player(s) are greeted by hordes of creatures.
The player(s) must kill the creatures before closing the doors and depending on their performance, the player(s) are rewarded with additional items used in the original mode. The elevator will finally stop in 2000 as the player(s) see James Taylor and Gary Stewart preparing to face the next creature horde.
The Xbox version also included a 13-minute preview of the upcoming House of the Dead movie, including a behind-the-scenes look with input from director Uwe Boll.
The new attack bar seen during boss battles, in which players must shoot their weak points multiple times and completely exhaust them in order to disable their attacks, is a mechanic taken from 2000's Vampire Night, a light-duty shooting game co-developed by Wow Entertainment and Namco of Sega. Vampire Night shares enough similarities with The House of the Dead 2 that some considered it a spiritual successor or a worthy offering before The House of the Dead III was announced. Along the same lines, the "Reload" soundtrack from Vampire Night has been reused in this game.
