Some of the latest generations of iPhones or a few years earlier no longer use the fingerprint scanner feature known as Touch ID. This is due to a design change that makes Apple prefer face scanners or face recognition.

The face scanner or face recognition on the iPhone, which Apple calls Face ID, is claimed to be safer, although in several previous cases it was reported that it was successfully compromised. However, this way the iPhone access key is considered more practical.
Even so, during the Covid-19 pandemic, we were advised to wear masks while implementing strict health protocols. The side effect of using masks is that the Face ID feature cannot be used because some faces are covered by masks.
Good news for iPhone users, Apple has realized this and made a way to unlock the iPhone while still wearing a mask. How to?
There are several things that are needed first. First, the iPhone must be using the iOS 14.5 or later operating system. Second, you must also own and use an Apple Watch Series 3 or later model with the operating system watchOS 7.4 or later.
The first steps that must be prepared:
- Pair the iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Make sure the iPhone and Apple Watch have WiFi and Bluetooth mode on.
- Apple Watch must activate passoce and wrist detection.
- Apple Watch must be unlocked when using the iPhone access feature while wearing a mask..
Only use this feature when using a mask
Now the next steps that must be taken to activate the Face ID feature when using a mask:
- Open Settings on iPhone
- Enter the Face ID & Passcode feature, enter your Passcode
- Scroll down and activate the Unlock feature with Apple Watch
- The feature to unlock iPhone using Face ID while wearing a mask is now active.
How to use?
It's time for us to try it. First lift the iPhone or touch the iPhone screen. Now the iPhone account access lock opens immediately.

So this method works by relying on the Apple Watch you are using, not Face ID. iPhone will detect the nearby Apple Watch that was previously connected or paired. If the wrist detection feature finds out that you are using Apple Watch, the Unlock with Apple Watch feature starts working immediately.
