Instructions for installing Ubuntu 21.04 Desktop

 On April 22, 2021, Ubuntu officially released Ubuntu version 21.04, codenamed Hirsute Hippo. This version has many significant improvements in the user experience. The new features take the lead compared to the previous version. As usual we will install this Ubuntu version to experience it!

Preparation steps for the installation

1. Download the iso installation file from the homepage at:  http://releases.ubuntu.com/21.04/
2. Install 1 virtualization software:   VirtualBox  or  VMWare  If you just want to install it on a virtual machine
3. 1 Bootable USB if you want to install it on your computer

Minimum hardware requirements

• 2 GHz CPU (Dual core)
• 4 GiB RAM (system memory)
• Minimum of 25 GB hard drive or more
• VGA screen resolution: 1024 × 768 for best image quality
• CD / DVD drive or USB Port to connect the installation device
• Internet to download updates, 3rd party software, ...

Instructions for installing Ubuntu 21.04

After downloading the Ubuntu installation iso file (capacity about 2.6Gb), you make a virtual machine and mount the iso file to install , or create a bootable usb to install.

Then reboot the virtual machine or computer to boot into the Ubuntu installation screen.

The left corner of the screen selects the language for the setting to be “ English “. If you are weak in English, you can choose Vietnamese to install.

Here we will usually choose a popular language and keyboard:  English (US)

OS and Software Update Options

There are 2 installation modes:

• Normal Installation: After installation you have enough browser, office, game, music player and many other tools,….
• Minimal Installation: After installation you only have browsers and basic tools

Other options:

• Download and update patches
• Install 3rd party software for graphics, wifi or media formats.

Installation type

• Erase disk and install Ubuntu: It will perform disk format and install Ubuntu normally
• Something else: Advanced options, you can create, resize partitions and mount it with Ubuntu filesystem

=> Click [Install Now]

After you click [Install Now],  you will get a notification whether you accept the installation => Click [Continue]

The screen determines your location
=> Choose your location as "your country". The goal is to set the timezone and time on your HDH

Create User's information

Create your first account, enter the required newsletters as shown below.

=> Click [Continue] To continue the current installation process

HDH will copy the file system, download the updates and install Ubuntu

After finishing the installation, a dialog box will appear asking you to restart

=> You only have 1 option is [Restart Now]

It requires you to remove installation devices such as USB installed. If using a virtual machine install iso file you do not need to remove

=> Press the ENTER key to restart 1

Login screen
After a successful reboot, you will be taken to the login screen.

Below is the name of the username that you have set in the screen " Create User Information "

=> Click on the User name

After logging in we are on the screen of HDH Ubuntu

We need to set some options initially

The first screen “Online Accounts” it asks if we want to connect to the account

=> Click [Skip] to skip

The "Help improve Ubuntu" screen

Do you want to send information about your computer, operating system, ... to Canonical so that they can improve Ubuntu?

=> I choose not to send and click [Next]

Allows the app to verify your location

=> The default option is not allowed

After setting some basic options you can start using Ubuntu

=> Click [Done]

At the end of the installation process, this is the Desktop interface of Ubuntu 21.04 (Looks like Ubuntu 20.04)

Home Directory with restricted permissions (Private Home Directories)

For other systems the home directory permissions is 755, but ubuntu 21.04 has limited to 750. That is, only users and members of the user's group can access the user's home directory.

The mount folders will show up in the upper right corner of the desktop

Although Ubuntu 21.04 is the latest version of Ubuntu, we recommend that you install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS as it is a stable version with long-term support.
